Results of a recent meta-analysis (51 studies and over 21 million participants) on cannabis use during pregnancy confirmed:

  • Cannabis use during pregnancy is linked to serious risks for fetal development, including low birth weight and increased perinatal mortality.

  • Cannabis use causes "significantly decreased blood flow and oxygen availability in the placenta" putting both the baby and mother at risk.

  • Cannabis use during pregnancy "more than doubled" from 2002 to 2017, with the increase in use affected by misconceptions that cannabis is safe.

Lead study author Dr. Jamie Lo points out that:

  • Public health messaging is unclear regarding the risks associated with cannabis use.

  • There is confusion among healthcare providers leading to poor counsel re: cannabis use during pregnancy.

  • Increased availability and legalization of cannabis complicate public safety perceptions of safety.
