Authors Barr and Walters point out that legalization of marijuana has led to increased marijuana use and addiction, as well as greater access to the drug, and acceptance due to false claims that marijuana is safe. They mention these and other known risks of cannabis use: an estimated one in three users become addicted; THC alters brain chemistry and interferes with normal functioning of the nervous system; marijana use can cause psychosis, schizophrenia, anxiety and suicidal ideation; marijuana contains many of the same toxins and carcinogenic chemicals as tobacco and causes many of the same harmful effects including cardiac effects such as heart attack and stroke.
